Fall Foxhunting Camp

Thursday, Nov. 4: Depart Fairwinds 8 am. Arrive Middleburg noon. Have lunch. Check out town. To Hunter’s Rest by 3 pm for hack out at 3:30 or 4 (depending on weather.) Snacks, settle in. Dinner: beef roast (from next door neighbor’s organic cows), tomato zuccini salad, risotto with mushrooms, homebaked bread, apple crumble, wine. Screen new foxhunting video after dinner – “Never Outfoxed” – a biography of Ben Hardaway.

Friday, Nov. 5: Breakfast 7 am – grits casserole (with cheese and bacon), toast, fruit, coffee etc. Riding lesson 8:30 am – cross-country techniques for galloping up and down hill, walking into your jumps, lateral movements (turn on forehand and haunches). Back by 10:30 am. Clean tack, put horses away. 11:30 am depart for Oasis (?) Winery for lunch and winery tour and tastings at noon. (** Possible visit to Old Dominion Hounds kennels at this time, too.**) After Oasis, we’ll visit one other winery – to be determined. 3:30 pm back to Hunter’s Rest for second ride (by popular vote and according to weather). Dinner at home – greek pork loin with olives, roasted sweet and Irish potatoes and garlic, salad, homebaked bread, orange-almond-cornmeal-champagne cake with ice cream. Set out clothes for hunting, races. Early to bed due to early start Saturday.

Saturday, Nov. 6: Breakfast at 6:30 am (?) Bacon egg and cheese sandwiches to go. Hunt with Old Dominion Hounds, probably cast at 8:30 am. Horse hire to be worked out. Hurry home after hunting: skip the tack, put horses away, depart for Montpelier steeplechase races ASAP – first race is at 1 pm. Pick up lunch on the way. After-race party tickets included. Back to farm by 6 pm or so. Feed horses. Light supper in: chili, salad, cornbread, toast S’Mores over the fire. More horse videos. Yoga for the horsewoman (by popular demand.)

** Alternate Saturday afternoon – anybody that does not wish to go the races may certainly do their own thing – hang out at home, shop, hike, fish, etc.

Sunday, Nov. 7: Breakfast at 8 am – pear dutch baby with link sausage, scrambled eggs, fruit etc. Possible hunt with Melvin Poe (ONLY MAYBE) at 9 am; otherwise ride out at 9 or 10 am. Back by noon. Serious tack cleaning session. Depart (with snacks) in time to grab lunch on the way home and home to Fairwinds by dark.
